Most bands are convinced they are victim to some sort of curse as they travel through a world seemingly populated only by irate rehearsal room owners, sullen bass players and soundmen with the hearing capabilities of octogenarians. The difference with J Xaverre is that with him, the spell is self-inflicted. “I found the name in a book in the library whilst I was at University” he explains, as the traffic rumble of Holloway Road roars behind him. “It’s an ancient Mayan curse. Part of the deal is that if I ever say the whole name out loud something terrible will happen to me. Anyone else can say it, it’s only me who can’t, which is a good thing. At least it stops me talking about myself in the third person…”
